Tiffany and Co.Museum quality hand hammered Tiffany sterling silver water pitcher adorned with applied aesthetic elements including large applied leaves, branches, spider, and on the reverse is a large applied dragonfly, in flight. The applied spider has the appearance of crawling between the leaves, down an engraved spider web, to an engraved fly that is caught in the web. This very fine piece is marked with 4706/3396 with a "M" date mark and it holds 5 1/4 pints. The pitcher measures 8"H x 7 1/2" and it weighs 33.1 ozt. The hand hammering on this piece is absolutely incredible. A work of art.Among the most exciting and innovative periods in American silversmithing are the years between 1867 and 1887, a period of creativity in form inspired by the influence of the Aesthetic design movement and the growing interest in all things Japanese that permeated the American consciousness in the late 19th century. At Tiffany, this hunger to capture the Japanese aesthetic was led by its head silver designer, Edward C. Moore, in the latter half of the 1860s.
